Field inventory worksheet

Forest Inventory Tool

Record a simple tree tally, calculate density and basal area, then export the inventory as a CSV file.

SpeciesDBH (in.)CountCondition / notes
Add trees to build an inventory summary.

What to record

For a basic woodland reconnaissance, species and DBH are a useful start. Add condition notes for defects, crown condition, wildlife features, invasive vines, unusual form, or other observations you want to revisit.

The worksheet calculates tree basal area from each DBH class and expands totals by the sampled acreage. It is especially useful for a single fixed-area plot or a group of equal-area plots whose areas have already been added together.

DBH reminder

DBH means diameter at breast height, conventionally measured 4.5 feet above ground on the uphill side of a standing tree.

For irregular stems, forks, leaning trees, and boundary trees, follow the measurement convention used by your forestry program or consulting forester.
